7 miles northwest of downtown San Diego is the beach front community of Ocean Beach, consisting mostly of low to medium density housing. Ocean Beach is divided into three distinct zones: North Ocean Beach, South Ocean Beach, and The Hill. Commercial are comprised of small businesses concentrated in Newport Avenue, Point Loma Avenue and Voltaire Street. Due to being ocean front property, house prices are generally higher than the San Diego average, but lower when compared to other beachfront communities.
Ocean Beach is part of the San Diego Unified School District and is home to two schools in its planning area: Ocean Beach Elementary and Warren-Walker. The Ocean Beach Mainstreet Association promotes and supports local businesses and other community organizations include the Ocean Beach Town Council, the Ocean Beach Historical Society the local chapter of the Kiwanis Club. Recreational facilities include Dusty Rhodes Park, the Ocean Beach Recreation Center and Robb Field.
Ocean Beach was initially called Mussel Beach due to the abundance of mussels in the area, but the name was changed to the much more marketable Ocean Beach.
